The random number generator has spoken and the winner this month is The Poison Throne by Celine Kiernan as suggested by Missy.

  3. Wow you got so many suggestions! How great!

  4. I love this idea. It must get you away from that leaning pile of books (don't we all have 'em?) and into reading something you might not read otherwise.

  5. Good choice! I just bought that yesterday :). I do wish one day you will get to read American Gods. It is really, really good IMO.

Ana, I read your review and have been anxious to read it ever since! *excited*

Sami, I know! I'm amazed at how well people know me and how widely read you all are. :)

Tia, exactly! This is the genius of it. I've been wanting to start it up for ages after following Janssen's progress.

Rosey, awesome. Looking forward to your review. And DH is with you on AMERICAN GODS. I've got to read it eventually.

  10. Michelle, steal away! I watched Janssen run it for quite awhile and just fell more and more in love with the idea. You'll have to stick THE SUMMONING in the hat next month. ;)

Ladybug, weren't there? I loved watching them pour in. I picked up THE POISON THRONE today so fingers crossed I can start it soon.

Charlotte, sweet! You know, I actually own a copy of NORTHLANDER? So I will definitely bump it up on the TBR.

  12. Hey, The Poison Throne seems like a great book! I'm adding it to my TBR as well. Looking forward to your review. :) Also, I have to second the Amulet of Samarkand recommendation because The Bartimaeus Trilogy is one of my favorite series.

  15. I love that list! That really is such an awesome idea...

  16. Karen, me too. We'll compare notes in a little while. I'm kind of in a slump right now with three separate books. Three books, mind you, I'm actually 3/4 of the way through and just meh. *sigh* Hoping THE POISON THRONE is better.

    Chachic, awesome. Noted.

Janssen, I can see why now! My goodness.

Chelle, ooh, will you be reading it soon?

Cam, isn't it great? Janssen really hit on it with this feature.

I just downloaded a kindle sample of poison throne so I can check it out.

Interview with April Lindner + Jane Giveaway!

I'm very excited about today's interviewee. As you know, I had been looking forward to the publication of Jane for months when a review copy happened in my lap and I let out a gasp of joy. Being a modernized retelling of Jane Eyre with a rock star-ized Mr. Rochester named Nico and a cover that hits every last one of my aesthetic buttons, it was sort of made to order for this reader. Needless to say, it more than lived up to my not inconsiderable expectations and I have been recommending it on a pretty much daily basis to family, friends, co-workers, neighbors . . . you get the picture. It's now just under a month until the book is out and, in anticipation of the release, I invited  April Lindner over to dish about all things Jane. She kindly accepted. Please welcome April! First things first: The Cover. I am in deep smit with that cover. Did you have any input and what was your reaction upon seeing it for the first time? I adore the cover too, and was blown away the...

Terms of Endearment

Have you ever been reading a book, moving along quite nicely, and then-- bam --a character whips out a particular term of endearment that just yanks you right out of the story? It happened to me recently, and I'm sad to say I couldn't recover. I did try. But she just kept using that term and I . . . I had to get the hell out of Dodge. Buh-bye, story. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. I'm not saying this is the norm (thank goodness). I can put up with a certain amount of treacly back and forth when it comes to the exchange of terms of endearment, especially if they fit the characters, their background, culture, the tenor of their relationship, etc. And the history of these terms  at home and from around the world is often fascinating (at times hilarious). But there comes a point where I can't see past the cheese and/or weird anymore and I do not want to be with these people any longer . Shallow? Perhaps. But it's a very individual thing, isn't it?...
