The random number generator has spoken and the winner this month is The Poison Throne by Celine Kiernan as suggested by Missy.

Missy had this to say in praise of it:
I'm currently reading this book and it rivals the Attolia books in court/political intrigue, not to mention the fact that there's a possible thief in it that reminds me of Eugenides.

    I love this idea. It must get you away from that leaning pile of books (don't we all have 'em?) and into reading something you might not read otherwise.

    Michelle, steal away! I watched Janssen run it for quite awhile and just fell more and more in love with the idea. You'll have to stick THE SUMMONING in the hat next month. ;)

    Ladybug, weren't there? I loved watching them pour in. I picked up THE POISON THRONE today so fingers crossed I can start it soon.

    Charlotte, sweet! You know, I actually own a copy of NORTHLANDER? So I will definitely bump it up on the TBR.

    Hey, The Poison Throne seems like a great book! I'm adding it to my TBR as well. Looking forward to your review. :) Also, I have to second the Amulet of Samarkand recommendation because The Bartimaeus Trilogy is one of my favorite series.

    Karen, me too. We'll compare notes in a little while. I'm kind of in a slump right now with three separate books. Three books, mind you, I'm actually 3/4 of the way through and just meh. *sigh* Hoping THE POISON THRONE is better.

    I love finding new book recommendations, and to get this many from so many people in one post is awesome! Definitely keep this feature - great idea!

    I just downloaded a kindle sample of poison throne so I can check it out.

Terms of Endearment

Have you ever been reading a book, moving along quite nicely, and then-- bam --a character whips out a particular term of endearment that just yanks you right out of the story? It happened to me recently, and I'm sad to say I couldn't recover. I did try. But she just kept using that term and I . . . I had to get the hell out of Dodge. Buh-bye, story. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. I'm not saying this is the norm (thank goodness). I can put up with a certain amount of treacly back and forth when it comes to the exchange of terms of endearment, especially if they fit the characters, their background, culture, the tenor of their relationship, etc. And the history of these terms  at home and from around the world is often fascinating (at times hilarious). But there comes a point where I can't see past the cheese and/or weird anymore and I do not want to be with these people any longer . Shallow? Perhaps. But it's a very individual thing, isn't it?...
