Top Ten TV Couples

This meme's been floating around for ages now and it's very simple. Compile a list of your top 10 favorite television couples and pass it on. I have to say this was one of the funnest memes I've filled out if just for all the memories it dredged up. I find the breakdown interesting: four sitcoms, four dramas, one supernatural drama, and one science fiction/space western. Hehe. These aren't in order of favorites, but rather in the rough order in which the series came out.
Angela and Jordan
I knew right away these two would be on my list as they've got to be the first TV couple that really captured my attention as a teen. I mean I was just a little younger than Angela when I discovered My So-Called Life. We shared a name, a penchant for slumping, and an intense longing for something--we weren't even sure what it was. Maybe it wasn't really Jordan Catalano after all, but he sure was worth hanging around to find out.
I'm in love. His name is Jordan Catalano. He was let back, twice. Once I almost touched his shoulder in the middle of a pop quiz. He's always closing his eyes like it hurts to look at things.
Monica and Chandler
I've always been a fan of the ensemble cast, in books and television, and that's the main reason I loved Friends. Episodes like "The One Where No One's Ready," where they were all six in the same room for the majority of the show were awesome. And I know everyone was all about Ross and Rachel. Together, broken up, on a break, lol! But for me it was all about Monica and Chandler. They were just so cute, such real friends, and they were meant to be together.
Buffy and Spike
It's hard to describe just how in love I was with Buffy and Spike. They were the first TV couple I was up at night thinking about. Some of that can be attributed to the fact that DH and I watched almost the entire Buffy series while up in the wee hours with baby boy. Watching Spike realize he was in love with his nemesis was like opening a giant present. Sorry, emoAngel. It's all about the Spike.
A hundred plus years, only one thing I've ever been sure of. You. Look at me. I'm not asking you for anything. When I tell you that I love you, it's not because I want you, or 'cause I can't have you, it has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try . . . I've seen your strength, and your kindness, I've seen the best and the worst of you and I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You are a hell of a woman. You're the one, Buffy.
*swoon*
Josh and Donna
It's to do with the constant bickering and years of tension between these two. Josh Lyman and Donnatella Moss of The West Wing fame hit all of my buttons and they did it just so charmingly. I mean Josh was a dolt--a brilliant dolt--but a dolt, nonetheless, when it came to his loyal assistant Donna and how they were obviously Meant To Be. But it was exquisite watching them circle each other for so long, laugh, tease, and always, always have each other's back.
Turk and J.D.
Scrubs never fails to make me laugh. I love Elliot and Carla and Dr. Cox and Janitor. But I laugh the hardest when Turk and J.D. are deep in the throes of their hilariously co-dependent best friendship. These two are incorrigible. Their friendship is as close as any I've seen or experienced and it really made the series for me. These two sappy geeks were without a doubt my favorite "couple" on the show.
"It's guy love, between two guys..."
Logan and Veronica
Aaaand right up there with Buffy and Spike for your bad boys and kick-a** girls, we have Logan Echolls and Veronica Mars. Duncan, Leo, and Piz, you were all lovely (well, not so much you, Duncan) and I'm sure you'll make some other girls deliriously happy. But you're no match for Veronica Mars. Three seasons and no one ever compares to Logan. He's volatile and damaged and can take a baseball bat to a cop car like nobody's business. Logan+Veronica4eva.
I thought our story was epic, you know? You and me . . . Spanning years, and continents. Lives ruined and blood shed. Epic.
It was, Logan. It was.
Jim and Pam
Awww. Enough said.
House and Cuddy
Because he's scruffy and cantankerous and she's svelte and so the boss of him. I thought House and Cameron were cute. I hated House and Stacy with a fiery passion. And I waited patiently for House and Cuddy to get down to brass tacks. She's known him the longest and, as his boss, she can tell him where to shove it. And how. I love the flirting and the acrimony and the wit. If House can make a go of it with anyone, it's Cuddy.
Kaylee and Simon
I know when it comes to Firefly, Mal and Inara are the real stars and I wanted them to get together as much as anyone. But I just have this big, mushy soft spot for Kaylee and the Doc. She's the ever-chipper ship's mechanic and just as sweet as they come. He's the always-somber trauma surgeon and is wound as tightly as they come. At first it seems as though they'll never get together, but Kaylee's honesty and kindness loosen him up and win the stuffy doc's heart.
Liz and Jack
And last but not least--my favorite not actually a couple, couple. Both married to their jobs, the relationship between Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy absolutely makes this show. He's determined to help her get a life. She's determined not to turn into him. I love their scenes together and I secretly never want Liz to actually find someone because it would change the dynamic with Jack and I couldn't bear that.
Jack: Lemon, I'm impressed. You're beginning to think like a businessman.
Liz: Businesswoman.
Jack: I don't think that's a word.
And that's it for me. What about you? Which couples make it onto your list?

  2. Fun meme! Very tempting to jump in. I would have to agree on Simon/Kylee and Jim/Pam.. the others I don't know very well, so my list would be quite different anyway.

  3. I 100% agree with your assessment of Monica and Chandler being the more fun couple to watch on Friends, and just looking at the picture of Donna and Josh from West Wing gave me the chills. I love those two. You know a show is good when it makes you want to pack up and move to Capitol Hill when you don't have a single political bone running through your body...

i love jim and pam as a couple just for the way they *look* at each other, especially before they were dating and at the beginning of their relationship. such a wealth of information flows to each other just in a look. love it.

  5. Oh ha! ha! I've never seen any of those shows except for a bunch of episodes of Friends probably. I don't really watch TV shows anymore, but I did do this meme months ago and well .. .. if you LOOK HERE, you'll see all the shows I refer to are what? From the 80s? Earlier? Reruns you watch in the middle of the night? Sheesh. ;)

  6. The House and Firefly couples rock! Jennifer & Rodney in Stargate: Atlantis were cute, too. And the nerd in me will always love the Mulder-Scully thing!

  7. Awesome picks! I absolutely love the fact that you put My So-called Life up there . . . I completely loved that show. Remember when she thought Jordan wrote a song for her because he was singing about "Red" and then it ended up being about his car? Heartbreak. My absolute favorite though was when Jordan came to her house in the middle of the night while she was eating lunch meat as a snack, and she was says "I've dreamed about that happening so many times--minus the cold cuts." hehe! Ok, that sounds really stupid now that I've typed it out, but it was classic.

Also can't get enough of Jack and Liz... so funny.

  8. Other than a couple of shows I'm not familiar with - 30 Rock, the Office and Veronica Mars - I can't fault a single choice here.

However, a better couple than Buffy and Spike could probably be Angel and Spike. Those two were hilarious in the last season of Angel. "You're a wee little puppet man!" I love that episode!

  9. Love Buffy and Spike and Josh and Donna..great list overall though :)

  12. Maria, I thought so, too. :) They make me happy.

Suey, by all means, jump in! And yay for Simon and Kaylee. I love it when two such different people find each other and fit. Would love to see your list.

Jessie, another Monica/Chandler fan! Rachel and Ross got old, but Monica and Chandler never did. And I'm with you on the Josh/Donna chills. They were made of win from the very beginning.

lustyreader, exactly! Those looks across the office...man they packed a punch. You just wanted so much for them.

Christine, *gasp* you must watch them. You must watch Buffy and Veronica Mars at the very least. Ohmyword are they good. I loved your list, btw. Those were some great shows and couples.

Diane, see, I haven't seen enough X-Files to pick them, though I definitely like what I've seen. Will also have to check out Stargate: Atlantis!

Cam, you lived it, too!? *highfive* This makes me very happy. Those two had so many awkward, embarrassing moments. But they were so real and that is what made them awesome.

Jackie, so true. Angel and Spike rocked the house in that last season of Angel. It was fun to see them together again.

Caitlin, yup, love 'em. Love 'em all.

Laura, well, sit down and pull up a chair. We're mighty glad to have you. ;) And so pleased you love the header. My brother-in-law painted it for me and surprised me with it. Needless to say I love it (and him) so very, very much.

  13. Sami, ooh, throw down the gauntlet, why don't you? :) I don't know if it's possible to narrow it down to 10 but I'll think on it...

  14. hmmmmm.....we must be related. I'd have to agree with 7 out of 10 of your pics. You have great taste in TV girl. We need to be neighbors so we can watch TV together sometimes.

  15. I love Buffy and Spike the most!

  16. Oo, I agree with so many of these picks! Except I have to say no to the Buffy/Spike thing - I was watching the Buffy/Angel business at a vulnerable time & became very emotionally invested. :P

Love the Josh/Donna pick too. I'm just starting to get into the West Wing, and am so enjoying their relationship. :)

  17. I'm an Angel girl and would pick Buffy & Angel. Also, Vincent & Catherine from "Beauty & The Beast," Dr. Mike & Sully from "Dr. Quinn," and along the lines of Angel & Spike from Season 5 of "Angel" (whom I also loved), Sam & Dean from "Supernatural." :)

  18. Brilliant I love all those couples. I'd add in the Dr and Rose, LOVED them.

I'm actually planning a contest based around my favourite book couples, you should come enter, I'd love to hear who you love. Starting 1st Dec when the NaNo craziness is over :)

  20. Veronica and Logan FTW! I still miss Veronica Mars so, so much. Only Logan could make me think taking a baseball bat to a cop car was one of the most romantic things I'd ever seen.

  21. This list of couples is pretty much perfect, you have great taste in Tv shows.
My favourites are Buffy and Spike
Veronica and Logan and Kaylee and Simon.

  22. I'm so pleased to see Mondler on here! I was a Ross and Rachel fan but thought it was ruined by the whole baby/Joey things-I hated those storylines. Now whenever I watch reruns I'm all about Mondler-I've been rewatching from the beginning (I'm currently in the middle of season 3) and there are so many enjoyable moments between them even before they're a couple. I am also even more convinced of their perfection. Okay, that was kinda long but I love them!

  23. Awesome list! You were right on with My So-Called Life, Friends, and Scrubs. But I have to say, I'm a Buffy & Angel fan (I was a Buffy fanatic but started having serious issues with the show after season 5.) I never actually watched the other series, but your descriptions make me want to! I'll have to add Luke and Lorelai in Gilmore Girls. And for a new show, Castle and Beckett from Castle.

  24. Amazing that I have never seen a single episode of Firefly, Buffy or Veronica Mars. I must have seriously missed out.

Oh, but Lemon and Jack - they are my favorite!!

You know who I loved? Niles and Daphney from Frasier. Niles was so cute in the begining of the show when he had a huge crush on her. He was always trying to smell her hair and sit next to her. So cute.

  26. I can't even do this on my blog because I would just have to say DITTO to yours, and I can't write it as nicely. So Ditto! Now I feel the need to watch almost 3 weeks worth of television and completely ignore the rest of my life. Please please please let me ditch the rest of my clients and watch Veronica and Logan...please?

  27. This is the first time I've seen this meme. I like your picks, though a few of the shows I didn't recognize. I especially like your pick: Turk and JD, love watching those two. They've given me many a side/cheek aches from laughing.

  28. Anonymous11:51 PM

Great choices! I loved My So-Called Life! I cracked up when I saw that you included JD and Turk, hysterical. I love the House choice too. Cameron and Chase's relationship bored me to tears from the beginning. It's all about House! And Liz and Jack are fantastic.

Logan and Veronica?...Blegh!! I mean, come on people. There's a reason that they didn't even work out in the end and why Veronica even told him she wanted nothing to do with him: Logan is too immature, he's way too quick to violence. In a nutshell, he's not the right amount of damaged that someone like Veronica would need; he's too damaged. And, you know, on top of that, he slept with the one person who Veronica herself would probably want to see dead.

I much preferred Veronica with Duncan. Duncan was really the only one of Veronica's boyfriends who really seemed on her level. He was mature and adult. Not to mention they had that whole Romeo-and-Juliet thing going for them: starcrossed lovers from rival families and all that jazz. Duncan and Veronica had some actual weight to their relationship. I mean, the guy was still in love with her even when he thought she was his sister. If that's not really loving someone, I don't know what is.

The worst thing anyone could say Duncan did was break it off with her in that indirect way that he did, and even then, there's the whole he couldn't face her because he thought she was his sister thing. He tried to cut her out of his life, but couldn't. Anyway, one of my favorite scenes from the series has got to be the Veronica and Duncan scene from A Trip to the Dentist. Its so intense, and was the perfect conflagration of pent up emotion and frustration. I think that some of the fanbase, those who like the Veronica/Logan relationship, feel the need to hate Duncan because they know that Duncan was the only one who could really rival Logan for Veromica's affections.
