Something about these covers makes me instantly fond of the girls they feature. Their hair rippling away on the wind, their stances both hesitant and purposeful. I like them. I think they're likely strong, and perhaps a bit mercurial. I think I shall endeavor to make their acquaintance. Mistwalker by Saundra Mitchell I'll admit, I haven't read anything by Saundra Mitchell despite many resounding reviews in her favor. I'm not sure what's kept me from picking her up, but this one might be the one to do it. Set in small-town Maine and featuring a haunted lighthouse and a spirit who collects souls, it sounds like lovely, lovely reading and it is officially on my list. Wow. These books . . . they need to be on my shelf. Like I am starting to glance at my calendar and mumble about how many months left in the year. Not only have they all three been on my must-have list for some time now, but they got themselves such fantastically pretty covers to boot. Way to go, little books! Way to stand up for yourselves and demand the eye-catching treatment. Now why do you have to go and be out next year?! Catherine by April Lindner This is the second novel from Ms. Lindner. After falling utterly in love with Jane , her contemporary retelling of Jane Eyre , I was signed on for life. But knowing that her sophomore novel is a contemporary retelling of Wuthering Heights sort of nudges me over into supreme fangirl territory. How will she update that bit of insanity? Chilling, aren't they? With the staring eyes and the the expressions on their faces, ranging from the haunted to the haunting, I just keep coming back to look at them. And I'm anxious to be creeped out and entertained by each one of them. Red Glove by Holly Black I have to say this cover reminds me of poor Annie and the freaking Red Room in the second season of Twin Peaks . And for that I have to say, "Thanks a lot, cover gods!" The end of that excellent show still makes me shudder. Sequel to White Cat , this is the second book in Black's Curse Workers series. I'm a bit behind and need to catch up before it comes out. When it comes to gorgeous, incredibly effective covers, these three sort of hit it out of the park. Vintage Classics knows how to package a book is all I can say and I want--no, I need --these three editions in my personal library. Covers, both good and bad, have been on my mind lately and these examples just go to show what magic can happen when you let talented graphic designers who've--wait for it--Read. The. Books. create new, attractive, and inventive covers. All it takes is a glance at the twining roses set against the brick wall backdrop on this cover of North and South to send me into John-and-Margaret raptures. Similarly, the broken windowpane on Wuthering Heights instantly evokes Cathy's ghost calling out his name. As for Jane Eyre , the silhouette is perfect and I want to go re-read it right now.
